What is Tithing?

As mentioned in a few places on this website, all album proceeds—including all pre-orders and donations—will be tithed on. So what is the tithe?

The tithe is the tenth. Specifically, the first tenth. As explained all throughout the Bible, all that we have belongs to God anyways. In return, he asks for one tenth back. And not just any tenth, but the first, the best tenth. The Words coaches that we are not to hold back, not to try and hoard what we have accumulated, but rather to live a life of thankfulness. Part of that is honoring the Lord with tithes and offerings. In return, he has promised to bless us. (And to clarify, the tithe is not something we do in order to receive blessing, we do it because the Word commands it. But look at the verse above; God's blessing in return is part of the deal.)

“And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord.”
  ~ Leviticus 27:32

“Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.”
  ~ Proverbs 3:9-10

“Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.”
  ~ Hebrews 7:8

To that end, the Words and Verses Project is committed to giving the first tenth back to God. All pre-orders and donations will be tracked, and the first 10% is dedicated to the Lord.

The More You Give, The More You Get

On the subject, it's worth noting that the Bible makes distinctions between two core types of giving. There is the tithe, explained above, and then there are offerings. An offering is a gift above and beyond the tithe, going past the 10% and giving more. An offering can be designated towards a specific purpose—a building project, a gift to those in need, a specific ministry like a children's home or missionary endeavor, etc.—or, it can simply be given as is to an individual's local church with the implication that the funds can be applied wherever they are needed.

Regardless where an offering is applied, God has stated in his Word that there are blessings to those who respond joyfully when they are led to give.

“Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering.”
  ~ Exodus 25:2

“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.”
  ~ Malachi 3:8

“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
  ~ 2 Corinthians 9:7

Beyond the Bible

Interestingly enough, the Biblical concepts of giving have largely been adopted by the secular world. Throughout history some of the wealthiest individuals have adopted the principles of giving away 10% of their money, and in all cases it led to greater prosperity. There have been several studies as to how and why this works, and why there's no empirical "proof," per se, studies have shown that people who tithe are generally more thankful, grateful, and balanced in terms of how they see and handle their income.

“I never would have been able to tithe the first million dollars I ever made if I had not tithed my first salary, which was $1.50 per week.”
  ~ John D. Rockefeller Sr.
